Yes they have private international schools. They are a popular choice for most foreign families living in Turkey, the standard of education is high and students have access to foreign standardized test materials. It is important to check to see whether the school is internationally accredited. If it is not, your child may not be eligible to enter foreign universities. You are required to submit an application for your chosen school; you need to start the application well in advance before you arrive to Turkey. The fees for private international schools, varies depending upon the school. They can range from around 6.000 euros a year to 15.000 euros and up for the prestigious international schools.

Tuition Fees for Turkish Universities :-

The tuition fee for the programs of higher education is determined by the Government at the beginning of each academic year. In 2003-2004 academic year, the tuition fees for international students varied depending on the nature of the program: Annual tuition fees;
v UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS:

1. State Universities:

a) Universities where medium of instruction is TURKISH:

Turkish nationals: US $ 80 – 250
Foreign nationals: US $ 240 – 750

Enrolment to Turkish Schools: documents required

Primary school

• Identity Cards (original and copies) of parents and child
• Certificate of Residence
• Three recent identity-sized photos of child
• All other documents prepared by the school

Secondary school

• Secondary Schools Exam (OKS) documents
• Six recent identity-sized photos of child
• Certificate of Residence
Identity Card (original and a photocopy)

For enrolment to the 6th, 7th and 8th grades, the Level Determination Exam ( SBS) results are considered. For the enrolment to secondary schools, a Secondary Schools Exam (OKS) result is required; the overall points calculated are influenced by the results of the SBS.

Vaccination requirements in Turkish schools

• Grade 1 of primary school: OPV (Oral Polio Vaccine), MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) and Td (Tetanus and Diphtheria)
• Grade 8 of primary school: Hepatitis B (if not previously received), Td and Rubella

The children's vaccinations are organised and conducted by the schools themselves.

School uniform is compulsory at Turkish schools, this is to avoid highlighting social class differences between rich and poor students.

The Turkish schooling system starts from the age of 3yrs and ends at age 18-19yrs:

• Pre-Primary (Okul Öncesi): This is an optional pre-school education, for children from age three to six years

• Primary (İlköğretim) education: Is compulsory education for all children in Turkey from age 6/7 to 14/15; it is free at state public schools and obviously paid for at private schools. This education lasts 8 years (Grade 1 to Grade 8) with foreign language lessons starting from the 4th grade

• Secondary (Lise): Schooling for students from age 14/15 to 18/19; it lasts 4 years (Grade 9 to Grade 12). Secondary education includes general, vocational and technical high schools

It is important to remember that the Turkish state schools do not provide special help to children whose first language is not Turkish. The language of teaching in all education and training at state schools is Turkish.

A student must get a minimum of 2 (passing) or 3 (satisfactory) in order to pass classes.
The students overall yearly average is considered if any subject grade does not meet the minimum requirement.
A student who does not meet the average grade requirements may pass if they have no more than two subjects with failing grades in their school career. If not, the year is repeated.

National exams

Students attending Turkish schools who are in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade (year) enter the Level Determination Exam (Seviye Tespit Sınavı - SBS) conducted nationally by the Ministry of National Education.

After completing primary school (after 8th grade), a student must take the Secondary Schools Exam (Orta Öğretim Kurumları Sınavı - OKS) in order to enter secondary school.

The school year runs from September to June, pupils have a three month summer vacation. The school year is split into two semesters, with a two week holiday in February. The first semester begins in September and finishes in January. The second semester starts in February and ends in June.
