The snow season has arrived and for those of you who love snow and winter sports, why not try skiing in Turkey? With destinations such as Uludag, Kartalkaya, Erciyes and Kars - it’s the perfect place for pro and novice skiers.
So get your skis, sleighs and snowboards ready, for its time to head up the slopes of Turkey!
Uludag – The most favoured slopes in Turkey.
Uludag, is located in the middle of the national park about 45-50 minutes from Bursa. Uludag is just a short ferry ride from Istanbul and has become a popular winter playground for the city's upper class inhabitants. Which means that Uludag can get quite busy especially during the weekends.
The ski resort consists of two areas, novice slopes, offering easier runs and steeper, advanced runs for the expert skier.
The ideal times for skiing at Uludağ resort is between December 20th and March 20th.
Uludağ Ski Centre gets around 3 meters of snow under normal winter conditions displaying powdery snow at the beginning and dewy snow towards the end of winter.
There is a wide range of hotels, as well as shopping and entertainment centers.
At Uludağ Ski Centre there are Ski Rooms for hire, skiing kits for sale and professional ski trainers available for ski courses.
Kartalkaya – Popular for skiing and snowboarding.
Kartalkaya ski and snowboard center is located in the Koroglu Mountains in Bolu, west of the Black Sea region. The resort receives many visitors from Istanbul and Ankara.
Kartalkaya has appropriate conditions for alpine skiing, ski touring and cross-country skiing. Kartalkaya Ski Resort is open 120 days a year, between December 20 and March 20.
The Resort has some very good hotels with each hotel having its own ski school offering private and group lessons. Other facilities include restaurants, swimming pools and disco-bars and a play center.
Erciyes – Perfect for Snowkiteing
Erciyes Sky Resort is situated 30 minites from Kayseri center, set on Mount Erciyes (3916m) the highest summit of Anatolia.
The Resort has seen recent development over the last two years, with new runs added and a modern lift system. It is the first and only place in Turkey where you can snowkite.
What is Snowkiting you ask? Snowkiting is snowboarding and kitesurfing combiend , but since it is done on snow, it is a lot easier to learn than kitesurfing.
Erciyes Ski Resort, whose lift fees are more reasonable than other resorts, can be reached from the city centre by local bus or the Develi minibus.
Sarikamis – Plenty of powder snow
Sarikamis Ski Resort is located 55 kilometers from Kars and is one of Turkeys snowiest resorts. There is no risk of avalanches here because it is set inside a forest and is protected against the wind. Also the ‘sudden fog’ many skiing enthusiasts complain about is uncommon here.
The snow, which falls here, ‘crystal snow’ is only seen in the Swiss Alps and is described as the ideal type of powder snow for winter sports due to its stability and resistance to melting.
Sarikamis is a small ski resort, which is noted for its variety of tree-lined runs and boasts Turkey’s longest piste. It is an inexpensive ski destination, which has quality accommodation.
There are many qualified skiing instructors based here and equipment for hire is available.
The ski season runs from December to April.
