Renting a car in Turkey and what you need to know

Driving in Turkey may be a scary thought for some, but in reality it's much easier than what you would expect.

After all, there is rarely any aggression on the road, almost zero traffic (out side of the major cities) and your very unlikely to see a speed camera on your travels.

But what are the important things you need to know?

What documents do you need to Rent a car
?
To rent a car in Turkey all you need is a valid national or international driving license.

You can also arrange for your hired car to collected at the Airport or at your holiday accommodation.

What side of the road do they drive on in Turkey?
In Turkey they drive on the right and overtake on the left.



Always carry your drivers license
You should always carry your driving license and passport as you may encounter 'spot checks' by the traffic police and they will expect to see your documentation.

What are the speed limits?
50 kilometres per hour in built up areas. 90 kilometres per hour, on open roads. 120 kilometres per hour on motorways.



How much is fuel?
Turkey is the second most expensive country in the world for its petrol and diesel prices:-
A liter of diesel will cost approximately 4.63TL and a liter of petrol 4.96TL



What are the seat belt regulations in Turkey?
Seat belts are mandatory for all drivers and all passengers when they are sitting in the front seat. If you have children who are under 12 years of age then they must sit in the back.

Can I drive in Turkey with my UK / European driving license?
Yes, but only for a maximum period of six months. After six months you are required to have a notarised translation of your UK license.
Note: You do not need to apply for a Turkish driving licence if your UK / European driving licence is the new style card with photo.

What should I do if I have a motor accident in Turkey?
If you have a motor accident in Turkey you need to call your rental company and they will assist you.
You may also inform the traffic police (Tel: 154) However, for minor accidents, this is not necessary.
 
Will I receive points on my UK / European licence for driving offences in Turkey?
No. As Turkey is not a member of the EU your UK driving license will not have penalty points added to it for driving offences in Turkey.
You will receive a penalty fine instead.
